Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a thinning of the bones that occurs as we age and is common in women after menopause. It can lead to fractures, especially in the spine. We take great care when treating patients who have, or may be prone to, osteoporosis by using gentle treatments for their joint problems, such as electronic adjusting instruments, gentle stretching with movement, and muscle release techniques. If you suffer from osteoporosis, don’t be nervous about getting treatment for your back pain, headaches, or other conditions. The treatment will be safe.
We provide preventative advice regarding diet and exercise to minimise the progression of osteoporosis.
Arthritis
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that can make joints hot, stiff, painful, and restricted in movement. However, many people who are told they have arthritis actually have age-related wear and tear, often called degenerative joint disease (DJD). Most joint pain is not caused by arthritis. More commonly, it results from ligament sprains in the knees, ankles, or wrists, tendonitis in the shoulders, or joint sprains in the neck or lower back. These conditions can often be treated successfully. If you’ve been told you have arthritis, let us perform some simple orthopaedic tests to determine the real cause of your pain and whether we can help. In many cases, we can.
Disc Injuries
Disc protrusions in the spine can cause severe pain and disability. We take great care to treat disc injuries safely and effectively. We have specialised equipment that is not available everywhere. In some cases, adjustments or manipulation are not appropriate, so we use gentle spinal articulation combined with traction on specialised treatment tables from the USA. We closely monitor your progress during and after each treatment to track improvement. Over the years, we have helped hundreds of patients avoid lower back surgery.
Sports Injuries
We treat many sportspeople, including soccer and rugby league players, softball players, and judo competitors. Dr Ken competed in judo for fifty years, and Dr Sian was a sprinter and hurdler. We have extensive expertise in diagnosing sports injuries and access to advanced treatment equipment, including shock wave therapy. We treat athletes at all levels, including Australian representatives, and understand the importance of effective strapping, rehabilitation, and a safe return to training.
Sciatica
The sciatic nerve is the large nerve that runs from your lower back, down the back of your leg, and into your foot. Pain that travels down the back of the leg is therefore often referred to as sciatic pain or sciatica. Leg pain can be caused by a disc lesion pressing on the sciatic nerve, or it may be referred pain from a painful spinal joint. If a disc herniation is compressing the sciatic nerve, you may also experience tingling, pins and needles, numbness, or difficulty walking normally. Your chiropractor or doctor may have performed a test in which you lie on your back while they lift your straight leg. If this movement is painful and restricted, it may indicate irritation of the sciatic nerve. However, if the pain is being referred from a spinal joint rather than caused by nerve compression, this test may be normal.
Knee Pain
We’ll quickly diagnose the cause of your knee pain. Most knee problems can be treated without surgery and are often caused by soft tissue injuries that respond well to shock wave therapy. We can determine whether your knee is too worn to improve, but most of the time it is not. If you have pain at the front of your knee when walking up stairs, your kneecap may not be tracking correctly, causing irritation of the soft tissues around it. We can treat the injury and help restore normal tracking. If the pain is on the side or back of the knee, we can identify the injured ligament or tendon and assist the healing process. If your knee feels like it might “give way”, we know why. The muscles at the front of the thigh can become inhibited after a knee injury. In addition to treating the injury, we’ll provide strengthening exercises to restore stability and confidence in your knee.
Hip Pain
The hip joint can cause pain in the buttock, groin, front of the thigh, and sometimes even down to the knee. You may notice a limp or difficulty putting on your shoes and socks. There is a simple movement test that helps us determine whether your hip joint is the source of the problem and can also indicate the extent of any wear. In many cases, some wear is present, but the main issue is that the hip is not functioning properly. We use a gentle technique that can help restore movement and relieve pain. We’ll also give you exercises to reduce limping and improve function. If treated early, we may be able to help you avoid or delay hip replacement surgery.
Shoulder Pain
We successfully treat many patients with shoulder pain. Ken lectured on the diagnosis and safe treatment of shoulder pain at Macquarie University and at seminars for other chiropractors. Sian has worked closely with Ken in treating shoulder problems and has extensive experience managing this complex joint. We treat frozen shoulder and tendonitis using shock wave therapy, gentle articulations and movements, and stretching exercises that you can do at home to speed recovery. We also use gentle electronic adjusting instruments and monitor the outcome of our treatments by reassessing how well your shoulder moves without pain immediately after treatment, so you can see the improvement.
Elbow Pain
We have successfully treated many hundreds of cases of Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow, and patients have travelled many kilometres to seek our help. Treatment may include shock wave therapy, massage, stretching, and home exercises. These conditions can persist for twelve months or longer without proper treatment, but by repairing the damaged tissues, we can often relieve symptoms quickly.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
In this condition, the nerve passing through the wrist in the carpal tunnel becomes compressed, causing numbness or "pins and needles" in the hand. Surgeons typically relieve the pressure by cutting the tight band of tissue across the wrist. We use a technique that gently stretches this band instead of permanently cutting it, helping many patients avoid surgery. Our treatment is painless and effective, and we have successfully treated many cases.
Hand Pain
Hand pain can be caused by a variety of soft tissue injuries. We will diagnose the exact cause of your problem.
Most conditions that cause hand pain, such as pain around the base of the thumb, can be successfully treated. Some conditions, such as trigger finger, respond well to shock wave therapy, while others, such as Dupuytren's contracture, can often be improved if caught early enough.
